What is the history of Freemasonry?

There is speculation that Masonic ritual can be traced from the Egyptian Pharaohs, through the building of King Solomon's Temple, to the Knight's Templar, and into the ancient guilds of operative masons that built the great cathedrals of Europe.

The first modern organization of Masonic Lodges occurred when the United Grand Lodge of England was formed in 1717.

The Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario was formed in 1855.

What is Freemasonry?

Masonry reminds and teaches us to be men of good moral character. It does so through the use of symbols and age-old ritual of in which all Masons are asked to play a role.

Freemasons act towards one another as "Brothers" and, as such, to protect themselves from those that would abuse brotherly privilages. They identify each other in unique and distinct manners or modes of recognition taught to them in moving ceremonies called degrees.

Freemasons meet in a 'lodge', which refers to a group of like minded men, at a 'temple', which is the symbolic name the building.

Freemasonry is not a secret society, but rather a society of secrets.

Freemasonry is not a religion, but accepts men of all faiths and creed who profess in a Higher Power or Supreme Being.
